Lady Gaga's "little monsters" let out a mighty roar this weekend, when Gaga became the first Twitter user ever to reach 10 million followers. To put that giant number in tangible terms: If Gaga's Twitter account were a country, it would be bigger than Sweden!
Since February, Lady Gaga has been running a tight race to the 10 million mark, followed closely by Twitter-obsessed teen star Justin Bieber. On Sunday night around midnight, with Bieber behind by over 300,000, Gaga reached the 10 million milestone. She responded by sending a thank-you note to her fans via -- what else? -- Twitter.
"10MillionMonsters! I'm speechless, we did it!" the pop sensation tweeted. "Its an illness how I love you. Leaving London smiling."
The message was accompanied by a glamorous Twitpic of a technicolor Gaga waving from a limo to a black-and-white crowd.
Bieber didn't send a congratulatory tweet, but he didn't seem discouraged, either. The singer, currently fighting through a chest infection to continue the Asian leg of his tour, tweeted a simple message of gratitude on Monday: "#ilovemyfans."
Lady Gaga currently holds the record for most Twitter users ever, but she's not the only celeb in the Twitter hall of fame: Ashton Kutcher was the first to reach one million, Charlie Sheen reached 1 million in the fastest time, and Beyonce is the first person to reach 1 million without writing a single tweet. Biebermaniacs shouldn't despair, though; Lady Gaga has the advantage of a new album on the way. Maybe when Bieber's next album finally drops, he'll have a shot at being the first to the 15 million mark.
